MMC at a Glance


Incorporated as the Community Mediation Center in 1998 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, MMC provides a safe, non-adversarial process for people to resolve their disputes confidentially and inexpensively. Our trained mediators help resolve disputes between friends, neighbors, groups, family members and between employees and employers.

MMC values diversity and its programs are intended to be a reflection of our communities, including the multitude of traditions, customs, and values. We honor, embrace, and encourage diversity in all aspects of our work and seek diversity in our volunteers, staff and board of directors.

MMC is supported by donations, grants, contracts, and fee-for-service income from training and other services that are provided on a sliding fee scale based on disputants’ ability to pay.


  • Impact in courts – reduced backlog of cases since 2007, increased efficiency, cut trial costs and saved money
  • Impact in families – provide low-cost mediation to families in divorce or other family conflict.  This program shows steady growth and is now at capacity
  • Impact in communities – train citizens in the workplace and in communities in productive communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Impact in schools – we have the capability to provide truancy mediation and peer mediation programming in schools
  • Potential to expand all services described above and to increase the impact

Conflict = Opportunity

Conflict = Opportunity is Midlands Mediation Center’s new initiative to engage community members in learning and practicing peaceful conflict-resolution skills.

The initiative, which emphasizes community-based efforts to teach and promote communication methods to reduce and resolve conflict, has recently been funded through a discretionary grant approved by the Richland County Council for the fiscal year beginning  July 1.

Leaders of formal and informal groups will develop an understanding of conflict dynamics and the skills necessary to uncover mutual interests and creatively resolve issues, leading to better outcomes for all.  Participants will have the opportunity to link arms and minds with others in the community who believe people are capable of resolving their own disputes and are interested in becoming more proficient with using mediation and conflict resolution skills in their personal and civic lives.

The project is designed to involve a broad cross-section of groups throughout Richland County. During the first year, the goal is to train 100 or more Conflict = Opportunity Change Agents.  They will be supported through a variety of ongoing learning and relationship-building opportunities.

Currently we are seeking individuals to participate in the following roles (some volunteers may choose to be involved in more than one role):

  • Community Advisory Group Members, who will meet twice a year with the MMC executive director and project manager to provide strategic input and community connections and to make introductions.
  • Steering Committee Members, who will meet at least four times with the MMC executive director and project manager to provide operational direction and leadership.
  • Volunteer Trainers, who will meet together at least twice a year and will be expected to facilitate the program for community members three to four times a year.
  • Support Team Members, who will meet together at least twice a year and will be expected to attend a majority of the functions to foster community and skill development.
  • Prospective Partnering Organizations that would like to involve their formal and informal leaders in this initiative.

General Year One Timeline (2016-17):

July – September: Recruit and organize Steering Committee, Advisory Committee and initial course trainers.  Select/modify training design.

October – December: Prepare training design and train trainers.  Identify and recruit at least 4-6 groups interested in participating in the initiative.
