Many cases that Midlands Mediation Center volunteers mediate in Magistrate’s Court involve landlord-tenant issues, including non-payment of rent and differences of opinion about the upkeep of the residence. With a general understanding of the South Carolina Residential Landlord Tenant Act, mediators may be better able to assist parties in moving beyond a discussion of their rights to building a resolution that addresses their interests, including a potential ongoing rental relationship.

Presenter Melinda “Mindy” Taylor, an MMC Family Court mediator and Staff Attorney at South Carolina Legal Services, will review:

  •          Rights and obligations of the landlord and the tenant
  •          Structural, health and safety standards and essential services
  •          Maintenance of the rental premises
  •          Right to enter
  •          Security deposits
  •          Steps in the eviction process
  •          When safety is at risk – staying alert to the impact of domestic violence in rental arrangements

Program has been pre-approved for 1 hour of CLE credit.
