Midlands Mediation Center is a nonprofit mediation center striving to resolve conflicts, improve relationships and strengthened communities.
We are inviting the community to join us each month as we dive into dialogue about different topics associated with our community. Each session is lead by a trained facilitator to navigate the conversation and ensure a space of dialogue and productive engagement. Topics we are addressing
- Life In the Time of COVID: Coping with Uncertainty – COVID has touched all aspects of life and has resulted in each of us struggling to cope with uncertainty and rapid readjustments. (July 2020)
- Courageous Listening: Neighborhood Conflict – how to manage difficult conversations (August 2020)
- Health and Wellness: Promoting Peace and Harmony in Community – how do we address the disparity in health and wellness in our community? (September 2020)
- Polarization: Our Differences Lead To Creativity – how do we hear each other with the sharp division of so many opposing factions. (October 2020)
- Restoring the Village – Working together to create a space where children are the responsibility of the whole community – a collaboration of parents/family, schools, law enforcement, clergy, business leaders and community organization (November 2020)
- Youth Trauma due to racial discrimination and bullying (December 2020)
- Community Safety– Infrastructure, street lighting, sidewalks, and overall safety in the community (January 2021)
- Family Separation – the process in developing an agreement (divorces/parenting/etc…) – (February 2021)
- Family Care – the process of caring for parents and/or dependent children (March 2021)
- Conflict in family – High emotion conflict in family relationship (April 2021)
- Poverty – What should the community do? (May 2021)
- Conflict in the workplace – Virtual conflict in the workplace (June 2021)

Conversation Ground Rules
- Be curious and listen to understand. The conversation is about listening more than talking. You might enjoy exploring how others’ experiences have shaped their values and perspectives.
- Show respect and suspend judgment. Set judgment aside, open yourself to learn from others, and makes them feel respected and appreciated. Practice listening, without interruption or crosstalk.
- Identify common ground as well as any differences. Listen for areas of agreement or shared values that may arise and take an interest in the differing beliefs and opinions of others.
- Be authentic and welcome that from others. Share what’s important to you. Speak from your experience. Be considerate of others who are doing the same. Don’t try to fix it, allow individuals to express their experiences and feelings.
- Be purposeful and to the point. Do your best to keep your comments concise and relevant to your answer. Be conscious of other participants and affording him/her the time to share.
- Own and guide the conversation. Take responsibility for the quality of your participation and the conversation as a whole. Be proactive in getting yourself and others back on track if needed.
